I suppose it's nice to hear Friedman say flat out that we need to set a date for exit, but he suggests we do that as a way of exerting influence over the Iraqi "unity government"--as if that government might muster enough control to actually create a secure environment while we are there.

But I think Friedman also contradicts himself when he says, on one hand, that the ISG report chastises Bush's conduct of foreign policy by not "buttressing what's going on there with help other countries," while then, on the other hand, saying those "other countries" are tough guys who have no interest in helping us at all.

Did he think Bush should have tried to get help toppling Saddam from Syria and Iran form the beginning? I sure as hell don't remember Friedman suggesting any such thing in 2002. Does he think we could have gotten help in 2003 or 2004 after it was clear that insurgencies were rising and that we were a magnet for terrorist activities?

What a weasling, disingenuous asshole!
