IRVINE, Calif., March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Linksys(R), a leading global provider of broadband, wireless and networking hardware for the Home, Small Office/Home Office (SOHO), and Small/Medium Business (SMB) corporate environments, today nationally released the EtherFast(R) Cable/DSL VPN Router (BEFVP41). This broadband VPN router meets the needs and requests of the SMB and SOHO reseller as well as the telecommuter and branch office IT buyer who require VPN functionality and security for remote office connectivity.

Linksys has an install base of over 2.3 million broadband routers, which has lead to the Company's leadership position in the retail (*70% marketshare) and distribution (*31% marketshare) channels. Many of these current router customers, including resellers and IT buyers, had provided feedback on what to include in the new VPN router. Some features included the same simple set up, the value and affordability Linksys has become known to offer, more than 5 user licenses free of charge right out of the box and free 24x7 technical support. Users also insisted on the compatibility with other IPSec servers and software as well as remote web-based administration that would enable IT administration to manage and troubleshoot from the corporate network.

Linksys Product Manager, Chris Chapman said, "We worked with many of our resellers and beta testers to find out what they wanted from a VPN Router that wasn't currently being offered. The result is our new VPN Cable/DSL Router that provides up to 70 IPSec VPN tunnels out of the box, no need to purchase upgrades or tech support, and the ease of web browser set-up found in all our other router products."

In addition to the embedded IPSec VPN capabilities, the BEFVP41- EtherFast Cable/DSL VPN Router supports high level security encryption and authentication protocols such as DES and 3DES (Data Encryption Standard) encryption and MD5 and SHA-1 authentication support. A new security processor from Hifn(R) accelerates the encryption and authentication tasks enabling users to conduct secure transactions more quickly. The embedded 4-Port 10/100 switch allows multiple users to connect to the Internet simultaneously while also achieving faster speeds when performing internal networking tasks such as file sharing and printer sharing.

The BEFVP41 router can connect to other IPSec VPN networks in the enterprise, branch office and home using another Linksys BEFVP41 or a main office network running compatible IPSec hardware or software products from third parties such as Cisco, Checkpoint and Microsoft. When running a Linksys IPSec VPN router at both end points of the communication or a VPN router and a third party product at each end gives secure sessions/tunnels on the Internet for the users to transmit requests and information through. With up to 70 remote IPSec VPN sessions established by the BEFVP41, users have a comparable level of network security as enterprise network users on site.

At an estimated street price of $179, businesses or home users with modest budgets will welcome this solution that can be easily set up without IT expertise or costly VPN software, which sometimes conflicts with PC or Internet setups. Since the router uses a web browser for setup -- it can be remotely administered by main office IT personnel who can troubleshoot and help with setup over the Internet. Small to medium business owners can build their VPN infrastructure easily and inexpensively by setting up Linksys VPN Routers at each branch office, while larger organizations and government organizations may use the VPN router with compatible VPN servers to exchange data safely and remotely. Home users can also feel safe sending financial and legal transactions, medical records, academic research and other security- sensitive data.
