Damn. I was a semi cap equipment analyst at a sell side brokerage for all of a year back in 1998.

I covered PLAB. I recall the price was about $25.

Today it's $27.

I wonder what it is about the photomask industry that prevents them from capturing a reasonable share of the semiconductor market's growth?

I recall there was this company ETEC systems which made the equipment which makes photomasks, companies like PLAB were their customer. They had 75%-80% global market share, so really, the only game in town. I covered them as well, located in Hayward Ca. They eventually got bought by AMAT.

I recall thinking as long as the US has a company key to semiconductor development, and it has 80% market share, no one is catching up to the US.

I recall ETEC came out with their new system in the brief year I covered them. It cost $15m a pop. I wonder what they cost now?
