TO ALL: I received unsolicited 50 hours free offer from AOL twice
within a two week period. During the past holidays, I loaded the software
and failed after trying both offers. I was able to access their
technical support after holding the line for 20 minutes. The problem
was that one of the diskettes was corrupt. Technical Support guy was
very helpful. Anyway, after loading the software successfully,
I have not been able to sign on after about a dozen attempts. One of
the recorded messages on their technical support line said AOL is
going to spend $250 million to upgrade their system (time period is
not known).

My gut feeling is that AOL cannot be expected to succeed with
this kind of service. Even if they upgrade their system, it will be
a long time before their business shows profitability because $250
million is not a small change. Receiving two free offers within a two
week time frame at the same address tells me that they are spending
awful lot on advertisement. In the meantime they will have compiled a
long list of many disenchanted new subscribers like myself.
