The problem is in management, as far as I can tell. Engineering for US stuff is usually better than foreign made, that's why our stuff can be assembled with less labor, and less educated labor.

But US management has (for many decades) spent little money on manufacturing engineering. They pay good wages to design engineers (which is why I do it), but the wages for manufacturing engineers are horrible. So no one is attracted to the business, and you end up with idiots managing our factories. The only thing that saves us is the high level of intelligent machinery.
