Here things were done I didn't know about. I didn't know we were supposed to wear red, white and blue today. I didn't know we were supposed to burn candles at 7 pm.

I wore blue to work, but I could have worn red, white and blue easily. About 7:30 I left work for home, and saw people everywhere carrying candles. When I got home, some young girls were walking on the sidewalk carrying candles. They told me that we were supposed to burn candles, so I went in and found candles and paper bags and put kitty litter in the bags and put lit candles in the bags on the kitty litter and put the contraptions (we call them lumenaria) on the sidewalk in front of the house.

The H took my kids and my car to the mall for the weekly Chinese dinner, and when they got back, they told me that a block away, all the neighbors were standing around, with lit candles. So we went there with lit candles to say "hi" and be neighborly.

My next door neighbor is waving a flag that is bigger than mine. He never waved a flag before. Two doors away the Middle Eastern family is probably hiding in fear. I never see them, except today I saw the high school aged boy in his driveway, confronting three or four white boys of the same age who seemed to be at the same time friendly and skeptical. I stopped to chat and he told me his parents were not home, they were praying.

Nobody knows what to do. The rules have not been written yet.
