Everyone: back up first This is critical.By “back up”, I mean make a complete image backup.

HELP! I thought I was doing the right thing, followed this discussion from earlier this year and acted on the recommendations. I bought a Seagate "Expansion" external drive, saved an image backup to it, and keep it unconnected until I'm ready for a monthly backup. I last backed up in June.

Yesterday I noticed that an Excel spreadsheet (Excel 2013 Professional Plus & Win 10) disappeared off my desktop. Then another Excel file today. POOF! Not in the Recycle Bin, not on a CD, just gone without a trace. Full scan with Malware and McAfee show no malware or viruses.

Both spreadsheets operate as heavy data crunchers. Their disappearance is anomaly No. 1 but its the second anomaly I'm chasing. I plugged in my external drive and manually looked for the backup files. Here's a screenshot of what I'm looking at:

Never mind, anomaly No. 3 is how to print a screenshot into SI. I'll just describe it: 13 files, all XMLs. I get Page Does Not Display when I try to open them. I guess I have to go to Recovery and restore everything.

But I don't want to re-install everything, just want to recover two relatively small Excel files. In the old days I would click on Norton File Recovery and it would present a list of all the deleted files, without the initial character in the file name. Clicked on the desired file and voila, it would restore the missing character and the file was then available. That's what I'm looking for but will follow whatever path works.

%(#*~!!@, couldn't be more frustrated with this. Much obliged for any help here.
