Dirk,

I don't believe the Latitude purchase was to provide Mac emulation
for BeOS. It *might* be for that but I believe Metrowerks would have
to do a lot of work to make that happen and I would personally be
disappointed in the management if they were pursuing such a track.
BeOS does not have much of a market presense and while it looks like
way cool technology, I am skeptical of its long-term success. I
believe Jean-Loiuse Gasse way overplayed his hand when negotiating
with Apple and the best Be will do in the market is to take over
the video-processing niche that Amiga had previously filled.

If memory serves me correct, Latitude was a product that provided the
MacOS APIs to function on UNIX. In theory, one could use their
product to recompile a Mac application and get it running on UNIX.

BeOS is very different from UNIX. They have their own micro-kernal
and programming model so I don't see how Latitude would help
Metrowerks. However, Rhapsody is essentially NeXT OS and NeXT OS is
based on the Mach kernal. Mach is a variation of UNIX and Metrowerks
does not have a Unix product.

To get to Rhaspody, Metrowerks must either port their product or get
a tool that helps them. They chose the latter option and bought
Latitude. Most likely, they did this because the cost / time to
market of doing a real port was too expensive.

One potential side benefit of this decision is that with Latitude,
I suspect they can probably also port their products to other UNIX
systems. This approach would give them a much wider presense in the
development tools market. I don't know whether I would favor such
a move or not, but the idea is interesting.
