I like Ascend - they show how to take advantage of the early market quite effectively. They are highly successful and dedicated to the bottom line... to a fault. They haven't grown the company to be able to dominate the landscape of the future. What are they - a company of 350+ people? For the revenue that they bring in? I see trouble. I think the mainstream market isn't here yet for these products. We have ADTRAN, 3COM, Shiva, USR, CISCO, Livingston, and a host of smaller companies in a market of 2+Billion expanding to over 10 billion in a couple short years. So Ascend has enjoyed a nice start to an early market. You got to remember that for product oriented enterprises virtually all high tech wealth comes from a mature, mainstream market. I predict they will stumble and fall while focusing too heavily on early performance - before the mainstream market hits. They are too small to keep up with the innovations happening at 3com and Shiva. On the comments page I saw someone call for 4th quarter puts on this stock. I concurr - but 4th quarter 97. For now they will enjoy the benefits of beating everyone else to the ISP market. Too bad they don't set the pace any more... It will be a loooong way down for Ascend - I smell some money to be made...
