I find it hard to believe that a Java rtos will have any significant impact on VxWorks. Java is based on object oriented technology which can take up lots of memory and can be slow (two things the realtime developer cannot afford).

Consider these points:

1. When was the last time Sun developed a product designed for the embedded market? Never did, except to point their customers towards VxWorks.

2. Embedded systems are usually built in large numbers. Therefore, unit cost is very important. These java thingies will require additional memory and an eprom (bios). Each of these devices cost extra and extrapolated over large numbers hit profits noticeably. When the moneymen get involved in the product they'll say that the extra expense isn't worth whatever gain they may get from using Java.

3. Didn't Bill Gates tell us that our office equipment and kitchen appliances would be running a version of windows by now?

Nope, I don't buy it. Java doesn't have a chance in hell as a rtos. I'm sorry, but I know of no printers whose software needs to be based on Java.
