"I now believe that the FAA is actually going to make it,"

Now, let me see if I've got this right. The FAA has more than
two hundred mission critical systems over eighty of which are
involved with Air Traffic Control. It just took them TEN
MONTHS to discover that one of these systems uses some
goofy, serendipitous, date-coding scheme that delays the drop
dead failure date until 2007.

Suppose you're being chased by two hundred pit bulls and
one of them falls over dead from a heart attack. Do you
celebrate? Declare victory? Call a press conference?

Don't buy into this happy-face malarkey. Lift up the corner of
the tent and turn on the flashlight.

Like the press ought to be doing.
