Compaq Only Seeking Merger With Hewlett-Packard, USA Today Says By Tamra Santana
Washington, Feb. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Compaq Computer Corp. says it won't seek a second merger if the $21.3 billion merger with Hewlett-Packard falls through, said Compaq chief executive Michael Capellas, USA Today reported.
Hewlett-Packard is the ``only deal for Compaq,'' Capellas told the newspaper. ``I can't see any other combination in the industry that makes sense.''
Capellas said he noticed a shift in momentum for the merger when the two companies posted better-than-expected financial results, USA Today reported. ``Investors gained confidence after they looked at this a second or third time,'' he said, the newspaper reported.
Compaq shareholders vote on the merger March 20 and Hewlett- Packard shareholders vote March 19, USA Today reported.
