I have an interesting book on my "to read" shelf. "The Year of Rice and Salt." It assumes the "black death" 700 years ago in Europe wiped out all the population. So the present world is a "Muslim/Buddist" one. The Industrial Revolution comes out of India. Entertaining concept. The REALLY GOOD one I am reading now is Crichton's, "State of Fear," where the baddies are ELF, the Environmental Liberation Front. They are creating catastrophes to force the Environmental Religion to be enacted as law. A typical Crichton "thriller." He is the master of the "evil businessman/mad scientist" genre, and it is nice to see him do this instead. Extensively footnoted with a thirty page appendix and bibliography. The MSM book reviews have done their best to savage it. It ain't never gonna be a movie! :>)
