The small clandestine teams, drawn from specialists within the Defense Intelligence Agency, provide the military's elite Special Operations units with battlefield intelligence using advanced technology, recruit spies in foreign countries, and scout potential targets, the officials said.

On the surface, this may seem like a new tactic and technique being developed by the Pentagon. In actual fact, it is old school.

We have always had an extensive military intelligence collection effort. We also had a large military counter-intelligence corps that was stood down in the 60s.

This should surprise no one. In every war we ever fought, we have greatly expanded our intelligence collection effort as the hostilities progressed. Since the days of the Swamp Fox, some of the information collected has been used for dark operations.
