Richard, part of the bit density increase in DVD is due to replacing the infrared laser used in CD-ROM with a shorter wavelength red laser.

Blue lasers will due the same for the next generation after DVD. But we are maybe a decade away from that. They can't yet make reliable room-temperature blue lasers.

If you are interested, you might look at CREE. They make blue LEDs and are working on blue lasers.
