NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- 3Com saw its shares rally in
after-market trading Tuesday after the company handily
topped analysts' first-quarter earnings expectations on
the strength of strong sales of its Palm products.

The company (COMS: news, msgs) said it earned $119.3
million, or 33 cents a share. Analysts surveyed by First
Call expected the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company to
earn 24 cents per share in the period. In the year-ago
first quarter, 3Com said its net income, on a pro forma
basis, was $86.7 million, or 24 cents per share.

Sales for the world's second-largest
maker of computer networking
products dipped to $1.39 billion from
$1.41 billion in the year-earlier period.

3Com (COMS: news, msgs) shares slid
7/16 to 27 5/16 ahead of the news but
spiked close to 30 in Instinet trading.
