Dave,
Don't forget that AMAT uses a high % of their sales income to
fund the R&D, otherwise Uncle Sam just takes it away as taxes
on earnings from sales. The money in the kitty is for investments and
rainy years where there is very little income. If anything the cash
will be available to pick up some new technology that AMAT
feels has the most future growth potential for the next 5-10 years,
like maybe X-ray lithography or ion/electron beam lithography, which
will take devices to 0.02uM potentially.
