Actually, the code is shaped by the chemistry. As we gain deeper insights into the chemistry (including molecular recognition by noncovalent force balance) it turns out that there is a clearlyy "best, fittest" assignment of codons to amino acids. So, plausible on the surface, and yet ceterum censeo the code and the chemistry predicate each other.

The code and the chemistry become one, Grasshopper. (grin)

You scored a point with the bacterial flagellum!! I had completely forgotten about it. Too bad it seems to be an isolated example of this sort of nanomachine.
