I think it was William B. Taits who made the first modern compass. It was liquid filled, jewelled and featured the first azimuthal display adjustable for declination as well as an accurate polaris sight. Unfortunately, the magnets in the Taits compass quickly degraded and the compass pointing became uncertain, leading to the saying: "He who has a Taits is lost"
