Hi moat,

I have read the book and recommend it highly, very insightful.

One of the most important disruptive technologies this year will be the acceptance of Linux as an adaptable, inexpensive and useful OS by a much larger user group than the traditional apache/academic crowd it is already accepted by. Already, several of the major players (IBM, H-P, Dell) are supporting Linux. MRVC has LAN-WAN product based on Linux. Corel is about to ship a complete Linux based computer system. One of the major oil exploration companies has used Linux on a graphics-intense geophysical survey and reduced costs vis a vis a Win NT solution by more than 80%. And the list goes on.

Steve Ballmer, President of M$, has had to address the question of "open source" software on CNBC and in other interviews. A year ago the question would have never been posed.

I believe this is one disruptive technology that is clearly "currently in progress". Other examples would include network "appliances" replacing PCs as the primary source of access to the Net, wireless solutions for the "last mile" replacing DUN and competing with xDSL and Cable modem solutions, SilkRoad's mono-wavelength terabit transmission obsoleting DWDM (maybe.....), Internet distribution obsoleting the reseller/distributor network. Japanese automotive styling and quality standards obsoleting the tired Detroit mentality. And a long list of others. We live in the era of the greatest "creative destruction" the world has ever known. And it's kinda fun.

Best, Ry
