DoubleClick has recently come under fire from privacy advocates for what their doing with regarding with Abacus Online.

Here's the crux of the problem compliments of The National Post:

Here's how the program works. Web sites that are members of the DoubleClick network are invited to join what's called the Abacus Online Alliance. Alliance members collect personal information on the people who visit their sites and submit it to DoubleClick, which places it, together with surfing histories, in a common data pool.

From this pool, DoubleClick can create extensive customer profiles and build predictive behaviour models. Alliance members can then tap these resources to target advertising at interested, qualified prospects.

Privacy advocates are justifiably outraged by the probability that most of the people who land on a member Web site and freely submit personal information will have no notion of the full significance of their decisions.
