ViaCell shares surge after initial offering

NEW YORK, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Shares of biotechnology company ViaCell Inc. (VIAC) surged as much as 68 percent in its first day of public trading on Friday after pricing its initial offering at the low end of its expected range.

The stock was up $2.31, or 33 percent, at $9.31 on in late morning Nasdaq trade, where it was the top percentage gainer. Earlier it rose as high as $11.75.

ViaCell, which is working to develop treatments for a variety of diseases using human cells and stem cell research, priced its IPO at $7 a share before markets opened. Earlier this month, it had put the top end of its estimated price range at $9 a share.

Amgen Inc. (AMGN) , the world largest biotechnology company, has a $20 million stake in ViaCell.
