Dave's long-time musical partner, alto saxophonist Paul Desmond who he met in 1944 while serving in the Army under General Patton, wrote the saxophone melody for the Dave Brubeck Quartet's (which Dave founded in 1951) best remembered piece, "Take Five," which is in 5/4 time and it has endured as a jazz classic on one of the top-selling jazz albums of all time -- "Time Out," which was recorded and pressed in vinyl by Columbia in 1959. It was the first million-selling jazz LP, and is still among the best-selling jazz albums. At the time "Take Five" was recorded Dave's quartet consisted of Brubeck, Joe Morello, Eugene Wright, and Paul Desmond.
