HIGH GRADE GOLD INTERSECTIONS AT MELIADINE WEST EXPANDS THE TIRIRUNIAK ZONE
CALGARY, Oct. 7 /CNW/ - COMAPLEX MINERALS CORP. (TSE-CMF) announces recent drill intersections have yielded outstanding high-grade gold values within the Tiriruniak Central zone on the Meliadine West Gold Project, as reported by the operator WMC International Ltd. (``WMC''). The Meliadine property is located 15 kilometers north-northwest of Rankin Inlet, N.W.T. and is held 50-50% by Comaplex and Cumberland Resources Ltd. The western half of the property is currently under option to WMC, who have the right to acquire up to a 60% interest in the Meliadine West Property by spending $12.5 million in exploration expenditures. Thereafter, WMC will provide non-recourse loans to Comaplex and Cumberland for all future exploration and development expenditures with repayment only from production cash flow. Drill results for both recent and previously released holes are listed in the accompanying table. Several exceptional intersections in the recent holes are noteworthy and indicate the eastern and down-dip extensions of the Tiriruniak Central Zone are open in all directions. Drillhole 96-74 tested the eastern limit of the Tiriruniak Central Zone and returned 71.45 grams per tonne gold over 5.18 meters. Hole 96-72, located on the lower western margin of the zone, returned 12.42 grams per tonne gold over 5.42 meters. Two step-out holes, 275 meters east (DDH96-73) and 600 meters east (DDH96-66) of the eastern edge of the Tiriruniak Central Zone also intersected significant gold values. Hole 96-73 returned 3.45 grams per tonne gold over 22.39 meters and drillhole 96-66 hosted two separate intersections of 17.46 grams per tonne gold over 3.29 meters and 12.18 grams per tonne gold over 4.53 meters. To date, the Tiriruniak Central Zone has been drill tested down to the -385 meter level and is wide open to depth (holes 96-64 assayed 9.3 grams per tonne gold over 44.8 meters and 96-43 assayed 6.27 grams per tonne gold over 57.93 meters). Based on a 100 meter drill spacing, the zone has an approximate strike length of 500 meters and plunges gently to the east. Drilling indicates the Tiriruniak Central Zone mineralization is concentrated in two parallel gold bearing shear structures that are in close proximity to one other. The upper, hanging wall structure is a sheared oxide iron formation horizon; the lower structure is a sheared graphitic argillite/mafic volcanic contact zone. Economic gold intersections are generally present in each of the sheared zones. Very high grade gold values were also returned from a series of mineralized zones located between the two shear structures. In several drill holes, the occurrence of multiple zones between the two structures can result in spectacular grades and widths, as previously reported for holes 37, 39, 42, 43, and 64 as described in the attached table. The latest drilling confirms this relationship continues to the east of the zone. Comaplex is extremely pleased with the results as reported by WMC and we anticipate an extensive drill program and evaluation will be conducted on the property in 1997.
