Qualcom has several patents on CDMA and other technologies. Stanford Telecom also has patents on CDMA but they are not as broad as Qualcom's and forces them out of direct competition in the cellualar and PDA markets. Both of these companies got their starts doing work for the department of defense where CDMA/spread-spectrum technologies were first widely used. They compete more directly in the global positioning systems (GPS) market.

Stanford has their govenrment/military and other contract work and their fast growth custom chip business. They have licensed chip designs to Zilog for use in combination with microcontrollers for wireless telephones, wireless lans and similar applications. They are working with HP on cable modems and set-top box applications. All the markets they are in look pretty exciting.
