How local is local?

Your house? the community center? The city? the county?

What's the main grid? Utility?

There's a high maintenance cost with most power plants. The average Utility "base loads" their nuke and coal plants. Combustion turbines, some hydro, pumped storage are all peak power units. Wind and solar really don't figure in to utilities at this time.

I have 400 MW to 1600 MW base loaded, that wears stuff out. Cycling my boilers up and down wears stuff out. Stuff wearing out causes maintenance issues. If you want me and my grid out there, then I need to sell electricity. You hooking up local and trying to run most of the time off grid, if done on a widespread enough basis, will hurt my ability to base load.

Thinking "the grid" will always be there is comforting, but without income, the Utility will shut down production.
