Rod, my comment about ignorance was simply a response in kind to yours. If you don't take it personally, neither will I.
Nonetheless, your assumption that those who agree with you represent the "informed camp" and those who disagree are ignorant, is somewhat arrogant. There are plenty of people around who know quite a bit about this business and who are in Iomega for the long haul.
I'd like to state that I do not consider an office full of Zip drives to be a serious alternative to a reasonable file server, in most cases. I am a networking systems professional, and I do believe there's plenty of value in networking. I just meant that servers aren't cheap. A reasonably equipped file server will set you back several thousand dollars. As someone pointed out, you can buy quite a few Zip drives for that amount of money. (Again, that doesn't mean I think that people should buy Zip drives instead of installing networks.
Also, yes the Zip is not the only backup device available for the home. There are others, as you point out, and in fact Iomega makes some of the most popular ones, the Ditto tape drives. And there are many other uses for Zip besides doing full backups with them.
I, for one, prefer Jaz for full backups. More expensive, but kicks the hell out of tape on the performance front.
CD-R for backup? Cheap media? When I can only use each disk once? I don't think that makes a lot of sense, economically, over the long haul. I don't consider it "a better alternative, by far." BTW, have you actually used CD-R for backup? That's a serious question, not rhetorical or sarcastic. I'd like to know.
I can tell you that I have not made money in Iomega on short flips. Shares I bought at a relative price of 7 in February are now worth somewhere around 23 at this writing. And I sold half my shares near the peak, post split, at 50. 7 to 50 in four months. Short term, certainly, but I think it's worth holding longer than two weeks. This is JUST MY OPINION, but the fact that it differs from your opinion doesn't make me ignorant or misinformed.
BTW, I don't recall any Iomega statements about Zip being a technlogical breakthrough. They have said that they asked customers what they wanted, and what price they wanted to pay for it, then built it.
Rod, I really do not want to get into a flame war. I just felt that your post displayed some arrogance, and felt like slamming you back for it.
Peace.
