VTEL INCREASES ITS MARKET SHARE IN CHINA, Sells 200 SmartStation Systems for Shandong Network

VTEL Signs Agreement with Shandong Posts and Telecom Administration

BEIJING, China and AUSTIN, Tex., July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- VTEL(R)
Corporation (Nasdaq: VTEL), the global leader Digital Visual
Communications(SM) solutions, together with its reseller -- Beijing
ModernLink (BML) Multi-media Telecom Tech. Co. Ltd., signed agreements
to deploy over 200 VTEL SmartStation desktop videoconferencing systems
to establish a videoconferencing network in the Shandong Province.

"This is the largest desktop videoconferencing deployment in company
history," said Jerry S. Benson, Jr., president and chief operating
officer. "The Shandong contract is the third major sale in the People's Republic of China in recent weeks, again indicating the continued worldwide leadership of VTEL in providing desktop to boardroom video networking solutions."

VTEL SmartStation desktop systems will be installed at 11 regional
posts and telecommunication bureaus under the management of China's
Shandong Posts and Telecom Administration. The 11 regional bureaus
include Jining, Binzhou, Laiwu, Zaozhuang, Taian, Liaocheng, Dezhou,
Dongying, Linyi, Rizhao and Heze.

"This SmartStation contract is part of the largest N-ISDN project to
ever cover Shandong Province," said Raymond C. Hsu, Beijing, VTEL
general manager of the Greater China Region. "BML promised a smooth
and successful network implementation and post-sale service."

Recently announced sales in China total in excess of $4.5 million,
reflecting the company's renewed focus on the Chinese market.
