Wonder of any of this soul searching was done the day after Nixon resigned.


Not that I recall. Nixon had been revealed to have committed crimes in office, and that was, at that time, extremely shocking to most of the American public. It damaged trust in the office of the Presidency in a way that has never been recovered from.
