You can start with deleting programs from the start-up programs.

Simply click Start, then, Programs, then Startup. If you right click on individual programs in that 'startup' section, you can delete them and they will no longer automatically load.

Don't worry, they can be put back with ease - your software is not deleted - it's just a 1KB size shortcut which can be restored anytime.

And a late thanks to wily and doug-e-mini for their answers to my questions. Too late though, I already paid for a miles worth of fuel on Bill's jet by buying Win98 not upgrade. ugh.
