George Gilder's Atlanta speech last Friday at the GTE e-commerce conference was followed by a Q & A, during which I asked him:

"Originally the electrical power industry didn?t have a viable business model until they developed the technology of metering the flow of electricity so they could measure value based on consumption. How do you compare that analogy to the Internet industry in relation to the metering of information and establishing a value for it, most of which is now given away free."

Gilder responded:
"Metering, encryption ? all these processes are very important. I?m on the board of a company called Wave Systems that actually focuses on this particular problem. They?re lots of different solutions competing. Wave Systems assumes that it?s easy to break software encryption and software protection. You can hack into those systems quickly if the reward is sufficient, as it is with any major distribution of intellectual property, such as it is with music or films. So Wave distributes the encryption and metering function in hardware to every device.

"Although it?s worth it to spend a tremendous amount of time and effort to break a bank, it?s not worth it to reverse engineer a chip in order to break into a cellular phone most of the time. So this Wave Systems solution is getting a increasing attention. It still hasn?t broken through massively, but there?s increasing recognition that software encryption won?t do it for protecting intellectual property."

Subtle yet effective, after all he is on the Board. How much more can he say.
