The Army is producing slightly more Green Berets as the chiefs of U.S. regional commands, called combatant commanders, place increased mission demands on the commandos. The five groups boast 3,950 Special Forces-qualified soldiers today, compared with 3,850 three years ago. A few points: The numbers are wrong. The writer failed to mention that 50% of the men on A Teams today are eligible to retire. They cannot because they have been locked in for the good of the country. When that restriction is lifted, everyone expects a big drop in current numbers. SF recruiting did improve for a brief period after heavy emphasis was placed on it. I hear it is tapering back down. I will check on that next month.
