Thankfully, smoking in this country is dying. The prevalence rate is down to 22% overall and only 9% for those over 65. For the first time in 2002, more adults have quit than are still smoking.

But more work needs to be done in prevention and cessation programs for those in lower socioeconomic groups and for the less educated. These groups make up the majority of smokers today in this country.
