Some Democrats Getting Squeamish Over the Leftist Extremists They Enabled 8 downtrend
There are indications that the Democratic Party may be on the verge of fracturing. What remains of the party establishment is slowly coming to realize that the prog base is totally insane, completely unreasonable and by acting like assholes is going to cost Dems even more seats in Congress.
That would be the extremist wing which is currently being led by obese millionaire propagandist Michael Moore and socialist crank Bernie Sanders. With their street mobs, threats and insistence that the big shots cave to their demands or else is going to exact a terrible toll come 2018.
Some top Dems are also beginning to fear that calls for the impeachment of President Trump could backfire in a big way and are quietly working to stifle such talk.
Politico reports “Democrats seek to quell Trump impeachment talk”:
Just a month into Donald Trump’s presidency, Democratic Party leaders are trying to rein in the talk of impeachment that’s animating the grass roots, the product of a restive base demanding deeper and more aggressive investigations into Trump’s ties to Russia.
Democratic officials in Republican-dominated Washington view the entire subject as a trap, a premature discussion that could backfire in spectacular fashion by making the party appear too overzealous in its opposition to Trump. Worse, they fear, it could harden Republican support for the president by handing his party significant fundraising and political ammunition when the chances of success for an early impeachment push are remote, at best.
The problem for party lawmakers is that the hard-to-placate Democratic base has assumed a stop-Trump-at-all-costs posture. At a recent town hall in Albany, Oregon, Sen. Ron Wyden faced three questions about the issue. Rep. Jim McGovern, who was also confronted with the impeachment question at an event in Northampton, Mass., told his constituents it’s not the right strategy for the moment, according to local reports. In California, a real estate broker has launched a challenge to Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher using a new “Impeach Trump Leadership PAC.
But it’s not just furious rank-and-file Democrats who are raising the idea. A handful of Democratic House progressives — among them California Rep. Maxine Waters, Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin and Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro — have already publicly raised the specter of impeachment.
Waters has said she thinks Trump is marching himself down the path to impeachment, while Raskin — whose office was presented last week with a petition carrying more than 850,000 signatures calling for impeachment — has repeatedly brought up the prospect of voting for impeachment “at some point” in rallies and interviews. Castro has said Trump should be impeached if the president repeatedly instructs Customs and Border Protection officials to ignore federal judges’ orders.
As the old Watergate saying goes, you can’t put the toothpaste back into the tube.
Another indicator that the base has run totally amok and can no longer be controlled comes via the New York Times which by citing the response of a number of political moderates to the increasing militancy of the left ponders the question “Are Liberals Helping Trump?”:
Protests and righteous indignation on social media and in Hollywood may seem to liberals to be about policy and persuasion. But moderate conservatives say they are having the opposite effect, chipping away at their middle ground and pushing them closer to Mr. Trump.
“The name calling from the left is crazy,” said Bryce Youngquist, 34, who works in sales for a tech start-up in Mountain View, Calif., a liberal enclave where admitting you voted for Mr. Trump is a little like saying in the 1950s that you were gay. “They are complaining that Trump calls people names, but they turned into some mean people.”
Mr. Youngquist stayed in the closet for months about his support for Mr. Trump. He did not put a bumper sticker on his car, for fear it would be keyed. The only place he felt comfortable wearing his Make America Great Again hat was on a vacation in China. Even dating became difficult. Many people on Tinder have a warning on their profile: “Trump supporters swipe left” — meaning, get lost.
He came out a few days before the election. On election night, a friend posted on Facebook, “You are a disgusting human being.”
“They were making me want to support him more with how irrational they were being,” Mr. Youngquist said.
AND
One facet of recent political life has been large-scale protests against Mr. Trump. They have been largely peaceful, but when there is violence, even on the fringes, it tends to reduce popular support for them, Professor Haidt said, citing recent research. And for many Trump voters, even peaceful protests are unsettling.
“I don’t have a problem with protesting as long as it’s peaceful, but this is destroying the country,” said Ann O’Connell, 72, a retired administrative assistant in Syracuse who voted for Mr. Trump. “I feel like we are in some kind of civil war right now. I know people don’t like to use those terms. But I think it’s scary.”
Mrs. O’Connell is a registered Democrat. She voted for Bill Clinton twice. But she has drifted away from the party over what she said was a move from its middle-class economic roots toward identity politics. She remembers Mr. Clinton giving a speech about the dangers of illegal immigration. Mr. Trump was lambasted for offering some of the same ideas, she said.
“The Democratic Party has changed so much that I don’t even recognize it anymore,” she said. “These people are destroying our democracy. They are scarier to me than these Islamic terrorists. I feel absolutely disgusted with them and their antics. It strengthens people’s resolve in wanting to support President Trump. It really does.”
Party leaders and their media cohorts did such a good job of brainwashing the mouth-breathers with their building Trump up as a more demonic incarnation of Hitler that they created tens of thousands of real monsters.
The Moore-Sanders base is gripped with a fervor reminiscent of the Year Zero fanaticism of Pol Pot’s Cambodian communist revolutionaries. There is no reasoning with these zealots now and the establishment Dems are delusional if they believe otherwise.
It was only months ago that the left was crowing about the breakup of the Republican party after Hillary’s landslide win that would usher in the final triumph of liberalism but times sometimes have a way of rapidly changing in unexpected ways.
Now it is the Dems who are breaking apart and could soon cease to be anything but a feckless and forlorn collection of politicians and an increasingly militant insurgency that will ultimately need to be put down like rabid dogs.
