Oh I dunno about that. Grant did all right in maneuver warfare out west. Vicksburg is a classic when he crossed below the city, IMneverHO. Lee certainly should be tarred with the same brush of Butcher considering Malvern Hill and Pickett's charge. The problem lay in control and the nature of the terrain between Richmond and Washington. Grant realized he had to keep a grip on the Army of Northern Virginia's throat while Sherman and everyone else out west slowly cut the south into smaller and smaller parts.
