Friedman along with millions of others are in for some very hard lessons.

The market will force us to conserve energy. Unless some new technology emerges that replaces petroleum fuels we will become more dependent on Mideast oil. The world will be transferring an increasing amount of its wealth to these terrorist nations, this will not change.

The US's demand is increasing for oil and natural gas LNG. Even if we become more efficient our absolute demand will increase and our imports will rise because our domestic production is decreasing and our economy is growing.

There is no way to avoid confrontation with the fact that 2/3 of the worlds energy is sitting around the Persian Gulf and that other nations want to secure their future supply. Per capita US citizens use 25 times more fuel than 4-5 billion people in growing economies. We cannot conserve our way to safety.
