I think it was an April Fools's joke, but of course the reason it is funny is that it is an exaggeration of the truth. Some of the French cheeses were pretty strong on the bacteria, using nonpasteurized milk. I'm not sure those cheeses travel well without becoming dangerous. Everyone makes beer in Europe so I'm not sure why the European Union would get involved. It is nice, though, that they are severely regulating how animals must be treated, and their public health goals are laudible. I do think the EU is a threat to the domination of the U.S. economy, because it is a bigger economy than ours.
