Al-Qaida chief shot dead in Baghdad raid
Tue 27 Sep 2005

AL-QAIDA'S second in command in Iraq has been shot dead after a tip-off led US soldiers to a Baghdad high-rise, it was reported today.

Iraqi and US officials said Abu Azzam, described as an aide to leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, had been shot dead in a joint operation yesterday.

US forces reportedly killed Azzam in a house raid in Baghdad. US military spokesman Lt-Col Steve Boylan said troops located Azzam following a tip-off from an Iraqi citizen.

The US authorities are offering $25 million for the capture of Zarqawi, who is believed to be behind the kidnapping and beheading of several foreigners in Iraq. His group is also thought to be responsible for a long list of suicide bombings and attacks on Iraqi and US forces.

Zarqawi is thought to be hiding in the Euphrates River valley, where the US has carried out frequent operations aimed at capturing him. Azzam, also know as Amir of Anbar, was listed as a Zarqawi lieutenant, with a £28,100 reward for his capture.
