Hamas shells blamed for 21 deaths at rally Wed 28 Sep 2005 MARGARET NEIGHBOUR SHRAPNEL found in the bodies of people killed in a blast at a Hamas rally last week came from the militant group's own homemade rockets, according to a forensic report published by the Palestinian Authority yesterday. The report by the Interior Ministry's explosives unit said the shrapnel resembled that used in the noses of the Qassam rockets used by Hamas. The blast, at the rally in the crowded Jebaliya refugee camp Friday, killed 21 people. They included a seven-year-old boy who died of his wounds yesterday. Hamas said Israeli aircraft had fired missiles into the crowd, which Israel denied. The Palestinian Authority said the blast was caused when Hamas militants mishandled explosives during the celebration of Israel's withdrawal from Gaza. The blast came from a pick-up truck carrying masked Islamic militants and homemade rockets. Following the explosion, Hamas militants fired nearly 40 rockets into southern Israel, injuring six people. This provoked a wide-ranging offensive by Israeli forces, with airstrikes and the arrests of many leading Hamas members. Hamas yesterday claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and killing of an Israeli in the West Bank, saying it had intended to ransom him for the release of jailed comrades - until the arrests. The body of Sasson Nuriel, 50, who went missing last week, was discovered outside Ramallah on Monday. A statement by Hamas, which is sworn to the Jewish state's destruction, said: "The unit was preparing to swap the Zionist prisoner for prisoners of the Palestinian people, but the campaign of random arrests by the occupation forces in West Bank cities forced our unit to kill him."
