Some would stick with their guns, but they don't have all the votes, not even in the alternate universe scenario in which the debt limit still hadn't been extended. Many people in congress (almost all Democrats at this point) would have supported the so called "clean bill" where the debt limit was simply and promptly extended before it became an issue. Many others are in between that and the more radical tea party affiliated members of congress. If a coalition for "no extension" or more likely "no extension without a balanced budget amendment", or "no extension without serious immediate cuts", had been strong enough to block the passage of the bill, they probably would have been barely strong enough, pick off a handful of them and you get the extension, even if most refused to yield.
