Jack - I was wondering why I have seen so little comment on the article I saw yesterday (I cannot remember where but think it was on the Fool) about Ciena's plan for o-o switching.

The article said they planned to add an o-o layer to the current CD box, giving the same box both o-e-o and o-o capabilities. Did you see this announcement? Did I miss the messages discussing it? Is this one reason the stock is as strong as it is in a down market today?

My thought about this strategy. Assuming they can execute, it wouldn't have to be as god as a dedicated o-o switch to be very competitive. Maybe even to be hard to beat.

My thinking is that this kind of approach (again, if they can do it) is a disruptive technology to all of what I assume will be relatively expensive new o-o dedicated switches. If this assumption is correct, that is why the Ciena approach does not have to be the best. It only has to be good enough for the bulk of the market, and it will beat the competition on price and ease of use. This approach also explains why Ciena has been very quiet about its optical plans.

Given I know very little about the technology, my argument may be full of holes. However, this is my gut feel from reading that article and I wanted your thoughts (and those of any one else who cares to join in).
