Hal - The OS Open Sockets Solution As a software developer who has worked both in the MSFT and Unix worlds, I believe that the current MSFT development environment already far exceeds the solution you suggest, with the NT subset being closer yet. There are clearly defined and published APIs for both applications and layered components which anyone can use, and they seem to work pretty well. The Microsoft Operating System would be limited to being just that: a platform for running other programs. All programs. Not just Microsoft programs. Let's go to Unix to get a historical perspective. What you are suggesting is that the OS vendor should just ship the kernel? Pretty much everything that Unix does, both on the command line when you type, and internally, would be a 'program' by your definition. I think the last examples of systems designed in this way disappeared about 1959 and good riddance. An OS delivered in that way would be unusable to anyone but a very well informed insider. Your comments on non-technical issues are usually well thought out so I am surprised by this post. Do you know much about the architecture of MSFT systems, the Win32 API set, the access to program internals and application APIs that any developer who asks for it can get? Most people working in this space are overwhelmed by the possibilities and concentrate on a small segment of the available information in order to get a working understanding of some part of the system.
