Oracle And Novell: Less Than Meets The Eye? - From InformationWeek.

From Novell: We don't have specific plans.

Seems like more of the same old, same old. Why, Why, would they not have plans, and worse yet, say they don't. Must be a Marengi deal. BTW, none of today's news is on BrainWire yet. What a company.

_____Oracle And Novell: Less Than Meets The Eye?______
Oracle and Novell detailed yesterday their plans to work
more closely together on product development and marketing.
But it could be months before the partnership results in new
technical capabilities within their respective product
lines.

At Novell's Brainshare conference in Salt Lake City, the
companies unveiled a four-part initiative: Novell will
integrate Oracle's transaction-oriented Web Application
Server with IntranetWare and distribute Oracle's Web server;
Oracle has formed a dedicated Novell Products division;
Oracle will "endorse" Novell Directory Services; and both
companies are promoting the use of Java for application
development. "Our competencies come together very nicely,"
says Gary Bloom, senior VP of Oracle's Worldwide Alliances
and Technology division.

But there may be less to the arrangement than meets the eye.
Oracle and Novell already work together to sell Oracle-on-
Novell products. What's different, says Bloom, is that
Oracle Web Application Server will be "integrated" into
Novell's networking software, while in the past Oracle and
Novell products were "loosely coupled." The integration work
is expected to take the rest of 1997. Bill Oakes, director
of business development with Novell, says Novell hopes to
have a test version of Oracle Web Application Server on
IntranetWare sometime in the fourth quarter. In 1998, that
integration will be extended to include NDS, systems
management, and support for Corba objects.

But Oracle already supports NDS's authentication, privilege
management, and name resolution on Oracle databases. Beyond
that, says Larry Robinson, director of Oracle's new Novell
Products Division, "we don't have specific plans."--John
Foley
