I think Oracle should venture out into the internet business not as a server and service provider but as a true internet player. If the CEO would've spent half the effort of bashing MSFT in capitalizing on the internet market Oracle could've become a gorilla. Also, personally I am not very up to date about the latest Oracle product. However, if I am not mistaken Oracle removed the query optimizer from release 7 and that caused a marked slow down in performance. I think Oracle need to provide some type of switch where developers can turn on or off the optimization feature (configuration). Lots of people started to see slowdown in performance once the optimizer was shut down. Not everyone is smart enough to write optimized code and therefore Oracle should not make any assumptions. If optimization can be turned on or off (preferably by the dba) then individual companies can decide which path they want to follow (whether or not query optimizer will be used). This is an important issue because performance and speed is very important when it comes to internet bottleneck and the product 8i. As far as marketing I am sure Optimizer or not, Oracle will be able to sell 8i to the database sector.
