What does that mean? Are they really going to be offering service that works anywhere in the country anytime soon?

Keep in mind that not even a cell phone works "anywhere in the country" more of the country isn't covered than is (by land area).

What this does mean is that Metricom has selected X top markets to offer its service around the country and has signed rights of way in half of them. If the X is the 50 top cities, then 25 of them have signed rights of way. I don't know how big X is.

Usually, though, there is a time delay between signed rights of way and buildout of the infrastructure.

However, once the rights are signed, its just a matter of money and time until there is coverage. This is really good as the rights can be a real pain in the *** to get.

Or, to put it more simply, Metricom is going nationwide over the next 5 years... and you'll have coverage in major cities and airports.
