Rosemary - I was surprised at how CPQ became the leader in the notebook market, Toshiba was the leader for so long it just seemed to come out of the blue! As for subnotes, might not be a bad market to be in as those boxes carry a premium compared to full size ones. I don't see too many players though, right now IBM seems to have the nicest one (TP 560), and Mitsubishi has this amazing box called the Pedion that contains a 233mhz pentium but is only 3/4" thick! Will sell for around 6k I hear, though. I wonder if CPQ has the technology though, I need to bone up more on their notebook operations, I'm under the impression that they, like Dell, don't make their own notebooks, which means they get them from Taiwan. I'm sure someone else on the thread can help us out on that. As for your post concerning less chips in PC's, the only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that some of the non-INTC microprocessors have additional functions built in. For instance, the Cyrix chip in CPQ's low end box has audio function, negating the need for an extra audio card/chips. If this were to become more of a trend, that might be what they are talking about.
