re: great speed debate From the Gignite your Lan seminar, Kim Anderson included a chart comparing end to end throughput for different size files 100BASET 622ATM FC1062 Effective Data Rate 98 516 1040 Switch Latency .071 .063 .015 (millisec) Throughput (MBPS) for 8 kbyte file 98 516 1040 Throughput for 8 byte file 88 342 836 Caveats: 1) He used latency from leading vendor for the products. 2) I didn't include the FDDI, HIPPI, ATM122. Suffice to say, FC has sig advantages. My understanding is that latency has a big affect on throughput as does frame efficiency. Here are the equations that were cited: Total transmission time in sec= (file size in bytesX8)/1,000,000 Latency ------------------------------------------------ + ------------------- (frame efficiency%)(rate speed in MBPS) 1,000,000 EndtoEnd Throughput= (file size in bytesx8)/1,000,000 --------------------------------------------- total transmission time in seconds Hope this ends the great speed debate!
