Re: That's enough to get MicroSOft into OverDrive to fix their Windows NT/2000 systems for stability.

Paulie,
This is theoretically impossible. They've been trying to do it for years now. 64-bit Windows is new territory, it will likely be even worse than Windows 98 for its first few years.

So why can't Microsoft make a stable OS? Very few people have ever seen the source code. Very few people actually understand how Windows works. On the other hand, Linux is open source and there's numerous people that have been working with the source for 10 years. A Linux guru I work with told me that 8 Linux guys in 3 months got further than an entire team of Microsoft engineers who were working for 2 years on cluster technology. Even if Microsoft opened up the source now, it would still be a few years before there were many capable engineers. 64-bit Windows may be used for very small servers and for the desktop market, but anything of any size will be Linux. This isn't a bad thing for INTC or AMD.

I'm kind of perplexed as to why Jerry said that sledgehammers success will depend on Microsoft. If this was really true, AMD would have beat INTC's offer for the X-box, even if they would've lost money. I think Jerry is sandbagging and trying to mislead INTC.

At least as far as servers go, I think both AMD and INTC will be relying on Linux for the OS with thier 64 bit processors.
