This will in turn cause even lower wages and benefits for private sector workers because the government competes with the private sector for skilled workers.

when more workers compete for less jobs, wages go down.

when there are more jobs than workers, wages go up.

if government has to compete more for workers, wages go up.

the problem is government doesn't have to compete in the market place for jobs. market forces don't affect government wages, political forces do. wages are now artificially high in the public sector so if wages are ever returned to market forces they will have to come down.
