In some regard, the developments in the Arab world today can be seen as evidence that the so-called Bush doctrine is working, he says, arguing there's a "demonstration effect" because of regime change in Iraq.

"It's preferable for democratic revolution to be indigenous and not the result of the U.S. coming in," Glassman says. "On the other hand, people are looking at Iraq, as messy as it was to get there, as one example of an Arab democracy, and the only substantial one."
